Glutathione: The Master Antioxidant

The Onyx Biolabs Glutathione Peptide (GSH) is a high-purity, lyophilized formulation of the endogenous tripeptide composed of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamate, and glycine. Often referred to in scientific literature as the “Master Antioxidant,” it is found in high concentrations in almost every cell of the mammalian body.

Unlike synthetic compounds, this Glutathione peptide is critical for the maintenance of intracellular redox homeostasis. Research interest focuses on its ability to protect cellular components from oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS), heavy metals, and free radicals.

Glutathione Peptide Mechanism: Detoxification & Cellular Defense Glutathione functions through two primary pathways in research settings:

• Direct Scavenging: The sulfhydryl group (SH) of the cysteine moiety acts as a direct scavenger of free radicals, neutralizing them before they can damage DNA or lipid membranes.

• Phase II Detoxification: It is a key substrate for the enzyme Glutathione S-transferase (GST), which binds to toxins and xenobiotics (foreign chemical substances), rendering them water-soluble for excretion. This pathway is heavily studied in the context of liver health and metabolic purification.

Research Applications & Storage This compound is supplied as a stable, lyophilized powder to prevent oxidation during transport. For research use, it must be reconstituted with Bacteriostatic Water. Once reconstituted, Glutathione is highly sensitive to oxidation and should be used promptly or stored strictly at 2-8°C.
